BRUSSELS - The Austrian EU presidency has promised to file a statement about the EU's concerns about alleged human rights abuses in Guantanamo as part of the final conclusions of today’s gathering of EU leaders.

Several foreign ministers on Thursday called for a common message spelling out the EU's view that detainees at the US base should not be held there without clearly stated accusations.

Washington is hugely criticised in Europe for the way it has been treating terrorist suspects kept at its base on Cuban territory.

Foreign ministers suggested the situation has even been damaging for internal politics in some member states.

Pressure about the base has been growing in the UK following a report by Amnesty International that at least eight men who have lived for years in Britain are being held at the US detention camp.

The British government is considering making "a specific, security-related request" to the US concerning the case of one UK resident, the BBC reports.
