Serbia to hand over Mladic this month

Serb war crimes fugitive Ratko Mladic is likely to be handed over by the end of August, Serb daily Blic reported on Thursday, citing a "top-level" government source, with Belgrade keen to become an EU candidate country by 2009. Serb intelligence already knows where Mladic is, earlier leaks said.

Latvia holds secret meeting with Belarus

Latvian PM Ivars Godmanis on 11 July met secretly with Belarusian PM Syarhei Sidorski at a Latvian border post to discuss transport and energy projects, despite an EU ban on meeting high-ranking officials from the dictatorship, newswires report. Mr Godmanis said he had EU approval for the event.

European consumers warned on Chinese goods

Chinese activist Harry Wu has warned European consumers against buying Chinese goods due to slave-like conditions for workers. "If you buy Chinese shoes, footballs, fake flowers or tools, you cannot be sure they didn't come from labour camps," he told Polish daily Fakt.

Fresh fighting in EU neighbourhood

Fresh fighting in Georgia's breakaway South Ossetia region has seen 18 wounded in unconfirmed reports, with Russia and Georgia to hold talks as Russian "volunteer" fighters flood in to help the separatist side. The EU is keen to boost involvement, with French FM Kouchner to visit Georgia "shortly."

EU's Chad mission running out of water

The EU's EUFOR mission to protect refugees in eastern Chad is finding it tough to secure adequate water supplies to deploy soldiers and build camps, the Washington Times reports. EUFOR hopes a visit by Polish defence minister Bogdan Klich may see the EU boost the mission's €120 million budget.

EU exports to Iran climb despite tensions

EU exports to Iran rose 17.8% to €4.47 billion year-on-year in the first 5 months of 2008 ending a 3 year-long decline despite political tension over Iran's nuclear programme, Reuters reports. The EU on Wednesday also urged Tehran to free two doctors and ease pressure on its Kurdish minority.

EU threatens aid cut after Mauritania coup

The European Commission has threatened to hold back a €156 million 2008 to 2013 aid package for Mauritania after the military seized power from a freely-elected government on Wednesday. The coup leaders on Thursday promised to hold fresh elections "in the shortest time possible."

European athletes in China protest letter

127 athletes, including dozens of European sportsmen, have signed a letter urging China to respect human rights and find a peaceful solution on Tibet. The letter comes as French leader Sarkozy declined to meet Tibet leader-in-exile the Dalai Lama before attending the opening of the games in Beijing.
