A new section in the EUobserver will be launched on 16 June 2009 and focus on the activities in regions and larger cities in the Union.

Regional policy today accounts for the largest share of the EU's budget, with more money spent on poorer regions than spent on agriculture.

- How has regional policy evolved in recent years?

- What role do regions play in the European Union's institutional framework?

- Can they help to fill the gap between citizens and EU institutions?

- How do regions outside the EU contribute to improving relations between the Union and its neighbouring and/or applicant countries?

- How do regions and larger cities contribute to the EU's aims of making itself more competitive globally and to combating climate change and moving to a low-carbon economy?

- What consequences will the current economic crisis have for regions? Could they help revive the economy?

- What will the priorities be and who are the main figures of the regional committee in the new European Parliament?

- Our journalists will also follow negotiations on the new multi-annual EU financial framework for 2013 onwards.

This section is expected to kick off with an immediate readership of 3,500 experts, with people directly involved in regional and city affairs in Brussels and throughout the Union making up the core group.

In addition, news from the section will get circulated to the 35,000 subscribers to EUobserver's daily news-updates.
