Swedish parliament to ratify Lisbon treaty

The Swedish parliament is expected to approve by noon Thursday the ratification of the EU treaty of Lisbon. Green and Leftist MPs are opposed and a number of individual members of the other parties may also vote No or abstain, with the house requiring a 5/6 majority to pass the bill.

EU lacks will to tackle Congo threat, says committee chief

The Congo is the first "indisputable threat" needing the use of EU battlegroups since they were set up two years ago, but the EU "lacks the political will" to send one, EU military committee head Henri Bentegeat has told Polish daily Rzeczpospolita, adding that "we will not have a joint [EU] army."

EU anti-piracy mission to start in December

French defence minister Herve Morin said Wednesday the EU's UK-led anti-piracy mission - EUNAVOR - will begin work escorting merchant navy and food aid ships off Somalia from 8 December, AFP reports. Russia has said EU and NATO ground attacks on pirate bases would be more effective instead.

The European Commission has shelved plans to call for new airport security scanners that show passengers' naked bodies on the screen, Reuters writes. The move, which follows MEP opposition, is to help Brussels focus on a new aviation safety bill that will lift a ban on liquids on planes by 2010.

Brussels wants new ship-breaking rules to protect workers, coasts

EU environment commissioner Stavros Dimas has called for new rules on EU-owned ships to be broken up in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. "Workers ... are being exploited and their lives put at risk working in deplorable conditions, while coastal areas are being polluted," he said, AP reports.

Cyprus backs Russian pan-Europe security treaty plan

Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias at a meeting with Russian head Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday vocally backed Russia's plan to create a new pan-European security treaty, AP says. Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Germany and Italy are the most pro-Russian EU member states.

Nordic states offer €2 billion Iceland loan

Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark will loan Iceland €1.98 billion atop a €1.66 billion loan from the IMF to help stabilise their fellow Nordic country's economy, the AP reports. The Icelandic krone has lost one third of its value since the collapse of the island's banks two months back.

Polish president repeats euro referendum plea

Polish President Kaczynski Wednesday again called for a referendum on Polish euro-entry plans. "The need for a referendum is self-evident. It would be like entering the EU without a referendum," he said, PAP reports. He also repeated he will not sign the Lisbon Treaty as long as Ireland says "No".

New eurosceptic group in Czech Republic

The Czech Republic on Wednesday saw the launch of a new eurosceptic group, the People's Movement Against the EU, aiming to block the country's ratification of the Lisbon treaty, Polish news agency PAP reports. "The EU is not the future of Europe," the movement's leader, Milan Krajcza, said.
