EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - One month before assuming the responsibility of the EU Presidency, the Finnish government unveiled the logo that will be used during the six month presidency.

Both the presidency logo and the presidency website were launched on Wednesday (31 May) by Finnish Minister for European Affairs, Paula Lehtomäki.

The logo is the result of an open competition run by the Finnish authorities and the final choice came for designer Timo Kuoppala from the advertising agency, Recommended Finland.

The Finnish logo is inspired by the lines and colours of the Nordic landscape.

"The logo suggests the green of a burgeoning forest, the sweep of the horizon and the blue of water shimmering the sun," said a statement by the Finnish authorities.

The logo design is also intended to symbolize cooperation among member states and an aspiration to debate and make decisions on matters of common interest.

The official Presidency website, which will be the main channel of communication for the six-month pesidency, will be available only in English and French.

But as happened with the last Finnish Presidency, information in Finnish and Swedish will be available on another website (www.eurooppa-tiedotus.fi).

The Finnish Presidency begins on 1 July 2006.
