MEPs' new deal on REACH chemicals bill drafted in Berlin

Berlin is likely to back the European Parliament's new deal on REACH, after German conservative MEP Hartmut Nassauer drafted the compromise in close contact with chancellor-designate Angela Merkel.

REACH stands for registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals.

The new law is designed to cut cancer and pollution by making companies register data on substances used in everyday products, with pro-green and pro-industry groups scrapping over the text for year...
