Italian President cancels meeting with German opposition

BERLIN - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, during his visit to Germany, cancelled his meeting with Social-Democrat opposition leader Peer Steinbrueck after the latter said "two clowns" won the elections in Italy, in reference to Beppe Grillo and Silvio Berlusconi. Gaffe-prone Steinbrueck is challenging Chancellor Merkel in general elections due on 22 September.
