Thessaloniki ex-mayor jailed for embezzlement

Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, former mayor of Greece's second largest city Thessaloniki, was Wednesday sentenced to life in prison after courts found him and two officials guilty of embezzling €18 million from municipal coffers between 1999 and 2008. The conviction sent shock waves through Greece's political and media establishment, reports Ekathimerini.
