Riga and Umea designated EU capitals of culture 2014

The European Commission on Monday announced Riga, Latvia and Umea, Sweden, as the European capitals of culture for 2014. "The title is hugely important for tourism, job creation and regeneration," said EU commissioner for culture, Androulla Vassiliou. Cultural programmes are set to launch in mid-January.
