Paris and Berlin are to forge ahead with their own alternative to the EU proposal on opening up the market in services following widespread negative reaction to the original in France.
President Jacques Chirac and Chancellor Gerhard Schröder announced their intention to go their own way on this issue at a meeting in Paris on Tuesday (26 April).
Mr Chirac said the so-called services directive, which was initiated under the last European Commission, "no longer exists".
