The chairman of the Liberals from the European Parliament Pat Cox was on Tuesday elected president of the European Parliament, after a 7 hours three ballots election. The Irish Pat Cox got 298 votes (the required majority was 285 votes in the final ballot), the runner up Socialist David Martin (UK) got 237, and the independent candidate Jens-Peter Bonde got 33 votes at the third ballot.
