Euro-zone could fail to meet its own criteria

With the big countries Germany and France about to break the euro-zone stability pact this year, the euro-zone economy as a whole is at risk of breaking the rules.

Such fears were voiced on Tuesday (2 September) by the European Commission.

"Given the fact that France seems to have gone off the rails a bit in 2003, the euro-zone deficit will be around 3 per cent, or exceed the 3 per cent figure", said Mr Solbes's spokesman and added that this is a sad fact.
