Prodi: EU is laughed at when compared to US

The President of the Commission Romano Prodi said that the EU's lack of common direction in foreign policy is making it appear weak when compared to the US. Referring to Israel's Premier Ariel Sharon's comments, who sees the US as the only meaningful player in the Middle East peace process, although the EU, Russia and the UN also are part of the Quartet, Romano Prodi stressed that the EU needs to speak with one voice, if it wants to have international influence.

Speaking in Florence, Romano Prodi was reported as saying: "Europe should have a role; saying that it should is exaggerated because we are not yet united to speak with one voice. But if Europe had a common goal, in these days it could have a very big influence in the world scene. But instead, we are being laughed at."
