The President of the Commission Romano Prodi said that the EU's lack of common direction in foreign policy is making it appear weak when compared to the US. Referring to Israel's Premier Ariel Sharon's comments, who sees the US as the only meaningful player in the Middle East peace process, although the EU, Russia and the UN also are part of the Quartet, Romano Prodi stressed that the EU needs to speak with one voice, if it wants to have international influence.
