Italy coastguard: 3,500 migrants rescued over weekend

More than 3,500 migrants were rescued from the Mediterranean Sea in 27 operations over the weekend, Italy's coastguard has said. Last week, about 5,000 people were rescued in a single day as calmer weather saw an increase in attempts to cross into Europe. Some 3,700 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean this year. EU government leaders will discuss the migrant crisis when they meet on Tuesday in Brussels.
