Mediterranean death toll passes 3,000 this year

More than 3,000 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean this year out of 250,000 who attempted the crossing, according to the Geneva-based International Organisation for Migration. It said the figure of known fatalities had reached 3,034 this year, compared with 1,917 in the first seven months of last year.
