Merkel becomes digital resident of Estonia

German chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday was given an e-residency card during a visit to Estonia. The Baltic state is a frontrunner in Europe in the field of digital government, including with paperless cabinet meetings. The e-residency programme, which began in 2014, allows non-Estonians to access Estonian services. Merkel could use the card to set up an Estonian company, open an Estonian bank account, or declare taxes.
