EU border guard ready for October launch

The Council of the EU, representing member states, on Wednesday ratified the creation of a European Border and Coast guard agency. The agency, which replaces the EU's border agency Frontex, is expected to be up and running in mid-October. The idea was first announced during EU commission president Juncker's state of the union speech last September. A pool of some 1,500 border guards will be at its disposal.

EU Modernisation Fund: an open door for fossil gas in Romania

Among the largest sources of financing for energy transition of central and eastern European countries, the €60bn Modernisation Fund remains far from the public eye. And perhaps that's one reason it is often used for financing fossil gas projects.

Italian central banker Piero Cipollone in his first monetary policy speech since joining the ECB's board in November, said that the bank should be ready to "swiftly dial back our restrictive monetary policy stance."
