Germany still taking lion's share of asylum cases

Germany registered 187,000 first-time asylum applications in the second quarter of this year, the European Commission said on Thursday. The figure accounts for 61% of the EU total (305,700) with Italy, France, Hungary and Greece also seeing large numbers. Applications jumped by 132% in Greece compared with quarter one, 118% in Hungary and 65% in Poland. They fell in Nordic states, the Netherlands and Belgium.

EU Modernisation Fund: an open door for fossil gas in Romania

Among the largest sources of financing for energy transition of central and eastern European countries, the €60bn Modernisation Fund remains far from the public eye. And perhaps that's one reason it is often used for financing fossil gas projects.

Italian central banker Piero Cipollone in his first monetary policy speech since joining the ECB's board in November, said that the bank should be ready to "swiftly dial back our restrictive monetary policy stance."
