UN critical of EU migrant return focus

The United Nations office of human rights on Thursday said the European Commission's renewed emphasis on returning rejected migrants and failed asylum seekers "waters down safeguards and rights that should be guaranteed to all migrants." The Commission had earlier this month piled on pressure for EU states to detain people, including children, at risk of absconding prior to deportation.
