Gay marriage becomes legal in Malta

Same sex couples in Malta can marry in civil ceremonies and enjoy the same rights and obligations as men and women after a new law came into effect on the islands Friday. Helena Dalli, the EU affairs minister, said it was designed to promote "equality in our society" and to fight "social prejudice". Malta is the 25th country in the world and the 15th in Europe to legalise gay marriage.
