Alternative women's rights fund raises €292mn

A global fund to replace US family planning aid has raised €292 million, said outgoing Dutch development minister Liliane Ploumen on Monday. The centre-left politician had proposed the fund in January, after US president Donald Trump banned US aid money from being used to provide or inform on safe abortions, leaving a gap of €600 million. The sum includes the €181 million raised at a donor conference.

Among the largest sources of financing for energy transition of central and eastern European countries, the €60bn Modernisation Fund remains far from the public eye. And perhaps that's one reason it is often used for financing fossil gas projects.
