MEPs back new border control system

The European Parliament on Wednesday backed the so-called entry/exit system to cross check the identity of people with various databases. The system, which aims to be launched in 2020, is geared towards registering all non-EU travellers throughout the passport-free Schengen area. Supporters say it will help detect terrorists and criminals using fake IDs. Others say it will result in unlawful mass data collection and deportations.

EU Modernisation Fund: an open door for fossil gas in Romania

Among the largest sources of financing for energy transition of central and eastern European countries, the €60bn Modernisation Fund remains far from the public eye. And perhaps that's one reason it is often used for financing fossil gas projects.

Italian central banker Piero Cipollone in his first monetary policy speech since joining the ECB's board in November, said that the bank should be ready to "swiftly dial back our restrictive monetary policy stance."
