EU opens new accession talks with Serbia, Montenegro

The EU on Monday opened two new chapters in Serbia's accession negotiations - on company law and external relations - and two chapters with Montenegro - on freedom of movement for workers and freedom to provide services. Serbia, which started talks in 2014, has opened 12 out of 35 chapters, with two already closed. Montenegro has opened 33 chapters and closed three since its started negotiations in 2012.

Among the largest sources of financing for energy transition of central and eastern European countries, the €60bn Modernisation Fund remains far from the public eye. And perhaps that's one reason it is often used for financing fossil gas projects.

Italian central banker Piero Cipollone in his first monetary policy speech since joining the ECB's board in November, said that the bank should be ready to "swiftly dial back our restrictive monetary policy stance."
