Italy's 5 Star drops euro referendum plan

Italy's 5 Star Movement has dropped previous plans to hold a referendum on euro membership from its manifesto ahead of elections on 4 March. It noted the referendum would be discussed in likely coalition talks, saying: "the political forces will have to tell us why they don't want to converge around this programme". It also promised a universal income of €780/month, earlier retirement, more public spending and lower national debt.

EU Modernisation Fund: an open door for fossil gas in Romania

Among the largest sources of financing for energy transition of central and eastern European countries, the €60bn Modernisation Fund remains far from the public eye. And perhaps that's one reason it is often used for financing fossil gas projects.

Italian central banker Piero Cipollone in his first monetary policy speech since joining the ECB's board in November, said that the bank should be ready to "swiftly dial back our restrictive monetary policy stance."
