Pregnant workers may be dismissed, EU court rules

The European Court of Justice ruled on Thursday that pregnant and breastfeeding women in the EU are not automatically protected from workplace dismissal in the event of a mass redundancy. Under EU law are employers normally barred from firing women from the start of pregnancy until the end of maternity leave. The court said that member states are free to grant higher protection to pregnant workers however.
