France and Sweden top EU fertility rates

France had the highest fertility rate in the EU in 2016, followed by Sweden, and Ireland, according to the EU's statistical office, Eurostat. Spain and Italy tied as having the lowest, followed by Portugal, and then with both Cyprus and Malta also tied. It also noted that some 14 percent of all births in Bulgaria and Romania were from teenage mothers.
