In a surprise vote, deputies in the European Parliament's environment committee have put car manufacturers on the back foot, not only endorsing European Commission proposals for restricting carbon dioxide emissions from cars by 2012, but also proposing a second, deeper target for reductions by 2020.

EU cars to use daytime headlights from 2011

All cars in the EU will have to be equipped with headlights and rear-end lighting that shine in the daytime as of 7 February 2011, the European Commission said on Wednesday, with trucks and buses to follow by August 2012. Aiming to increase road safety, the commission's plan has however already drawn some criticism.

EU to build 'Motorways of the Sea'

The European Union wants to move more transport off the roads and onto the sea in an effort to fight growing congestion and greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. These so-called Motorways of the Sea (MoS) are set to make fundamental changes to the European transport sector.
