Parliament to examine safety at sea

The European Parliament's Conference of Presidents decided unanimously in Strasbourg on Thursday (23 October) to propose to Parliament's plenary that a temporary tommittee on improving safety at sea be set up.

The main task for the 44 member committee would be during the next six months to examine in detail maritime disasters, in particular the Prestige, the Erika and other recent accidents and incidents.

Maritime safety standards would also be scrutinised.
