Merkel set to raise Guantanamo Bay in Bush meeting

German chancellor Angela Merkel is set to plea for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay terror suspect camp at a visit to the White House on Friday (13 January), while European Parliament group leaders have paved the way for the parliament’s own enquiry into alleged CIA jails in Europe.

The German leader made clear earlier this week that during her meeting with US president George W. Bush, she will raise the issue of Guantanamo Bay, where the US has detained terror suspects without trial.<...
