Greece, Italy and Slovenia have registered cases of the lethal H5N1 strain of bird flu on their territory over the weekend, with national authorities putting in place EU emergency measures while urging citizens not to panic.
Bulgaria, to join the EU in 2007, also announced to the European Commission on Saturday (11 February) that it had been hit by bird flu, following reports from other candidate countries earlier this year - Romania and Turkey.
