African exodus hits Spanish islands

Madrid is trying to stem a new migrant crisis after at least 24 clandestine migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa have drowned off the Mauritanian coast in West Africa in an attempt to reach the EU.

Officials from the Spanish foreign and interior ministries on Thursday (16 March) made an emergency trip to Mauritania to discuss ways in which to deal with the flow of migrants to the Spanish Canary Islands.
