The first exit polls published in Italy on Monday (10 April), indicate that the country's next prime minister will be Romano Prodi.
Exit polls conducted by Nexus for state television Rai show that former prime minister and commission president Romano Prodi is leading by 5 percent over prime minister Silvio Berlsusconi.
Mr Prodi and his allies are leading with between 50 to 54 percent to Mr Berlusconi's 45 to 49 percent.
