Finland wants to raise taxes on alcohol in the EU

Helsinki will work on raising tax on alcohol across the European bloc when Finland takes over the rotating EU presidency from Austria on 1 July, Finnish prime minister Matti Vanhanen has said.

At a visit to Finnish town Kiljava this week, Mr Vanhanen spoke about his own wish list for the six-month Finnish presidency.

One point on the list is Finland's intention to raise the minimum tax on alcohol despite it being a controversial issue across the bloc.
