MEPs join campaign for legal force of EU citizens petitions

Civil society activists backed by several MEPs have launched a campaign for a new EU law recognizing the legal force of citizens' petitions signed by one million Europeans - in a bid to avoid waiting passively for the final verdict on the bloc's EU constitution which introduced the idea.

The European Citizens' Initiative aims to collect signatures for a petition that the European Commission should be obliged to act if asked by a million citizens to propose a change to an EU law.
