Solana calls Congo leaders to urge 'solidarity'

The EU has congratulated president Joseph Kabila. the winner of the Democratic Republic of Congo's first free elections in more than 40 years, after official results have declared him as the winner, but the 1,400 strong EU force in the country are on alert for possible post-election violence.

In a telephone conversation on Thursday morning (16 November), EU foreign affairs chief Javier Solana congratulated Mr Kabila, but he also spoke with his defeated opponent.
