Barroso forced to defend Bulgarian nominee ahead of hearing

European commission president Jose Manuel Barroso has sent a letter to MEPs telling them that any accusations levelled against the Bulgarian EU commissioner nominee during what is widely expected to be a tough hearing later today must be backed up by proof.
