Martin Schulz, the leader of the European Parliament's socialist group (PES), has called on the European Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso, to explain his holiday arrangements before parliamentary chiefs.
"There is too much speculation doing the rounds at present. It is in everybody's interest that this should be clarified. The best way is for Mr Barroso to explain the situation to the Conference of Presidents," Mr Schulz said in a statement issued on Wednesday (20 April).
