Europe gets bad marks on innovation

Europe keeps lagging behind the US and Japan on innovation, with the Nordic countries and Germany leading the EU list, while Spain and the new member states are the bloc's worst performers.

According to data published by the European Commission on Thursday (13 January), the picture across the EU is "extremely diverse," but if there are no changes in the current trends "the innovation gap between Europe and the US will not close."
