France backs gay marriage

France' socialist government backed a bill on Wednesday that would allow same-sex couples to marry, reports the BBC. The bill would also entitle same-sex couples to adopt children. Some 1,000 mayors from around the country, including the Catholic Church, signed a petition against the bill.
