Crowdfunding needs EU rules, says markets watchdog

EU rules are needed to regulate crowdfunding and protect investors who face significant risks from the €1 billion sector, Steven Maijoor, chairman of the European Securities and Markets Authority, said Thursday. Crowdfunding allows individuals and businesses to raise finance from peer-to-peer investment schemes but is not currently covered by regulation.
