Dublin - Prime Minister Enda Kenny says voting in favour of the fiscal compact treaty on 31 May will secure Ireland's role in the eurozone and give the country access to the EU's long term bailout fund, the ESM. Others, such as socialist MEP Paul Murphy, believe a Yes vote would put generations of Irish people in austerity "bondage." The Berlin-pushed treaty, enshrining balanced budgets in national law, has unleashed a furious debate in political circles. But those on the streets of Dublin know little about it.
