The EU has welcomed the "free and peaceful" weekend elections in Congo - a poll watched over by EU and UN troops as well as hundreds of observers from Europe.
"It is very pleasing to see that the vast majority of the people in Congo have made use of their right to vote in the first free elections after 40 years," said Jurgen Schroder, a centre-right German MEP and head of the European Parliament delegation to Congo.
