European election law not yet complete

Candidate countries are being urged to transpose an EU law, which would enable citizens from another country residing there to vote and stand as candidates in the European elections.

So far only Estonia, the Czech Republic and Slovenia have done so.

The Commission estimates that in the next European Parliament elections to be held between 10-13 June 2004, there will be a further one million EU citizens added to the current 4.7 million living outside their home country.
