Brussels asks EU countries for another €5.9bn

The EU commission has asked countries for €5.9bn more money for 2012 in line with previous budget commitments. The cash will help plug funding gaps on student exchange (€90mn), research programmes (€423mn) plus regional and rural aid (€8.3bn). It said income from fines (€3.1bn) will help pay the costs.
