Latvia's first female prime minister sworn in

The Latvian parliament on Wednesday approved the country's first woman prime minister, Laimdota Straujuma, a 62-year-old veteran civil servant and agriculture minister since October 2011. "My government will be a continuity government," she told parliament. Latvia became the 18th member of the eurozone on 1 January.

More than two years after the EU Commission first proposed a law on forced labour, inter-institutional negotiations have not started because member states cannot reach agreement — risking the text's adoption before the 2024 European Parliament elections.
