Record numbers of asylum seekers flock to EU

The number of asylum seeks registered by EU states jumped by some 100,000 from 2012 to hit 435,000 last year, EU statistics say. Sweden registered more than large states Italy or the UK. Syrians were the largest group of applicants, but Russians also applied for shelter in large numbers.
