40,000 boat migrants reached Italy this year

Over 40,000 irregular migrants crossed the Mediterranean and arrived in Italy in the first five months of this year, according to the International Organisation for Migration. With summer months ahead, more are expected to arrive. Around 42,000 migrants risked the crossing last year.
