Top EU lawyer backs stem cell patenting

A human egg used to produce stem cells but unable to develop into a viable embryo can potentially be patented, advocate general Pedro Cruz Villalon from the European Court of Justice said Thursday in an opinion with business implications for biotech companies. The court must still give a final ruling.
