Denmark nominates female minister as EU commissioner

Denmark has nominated economy minister Margrethe Vestager as EU commissioner, a 46-year old Liberal who finalised complex dossiers during the Danish EU presidency in response to the economic crisis. EU commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker has promised better posts for female candidates in "compensation" for being outnumbered by male colleagues.

Polish abortion rights activist vows to appeal case

Polish abortion rights activists Justyna Wydrzyńska was last week sentenced for giving abortion pills to a 12-week pregnant woman. She will appeal. But with a court stacked by politically-appointed judges, her chances of overturning it are slim.
