UN says 2,850 EU-bound refugees drowned this year

The UNHCR Tuesday said 2,850 people died or vanished trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe this year so far, while 381,412 made it over. Most (258,365) landed in Greece, followed by Italy (121,000), Spain (1,953), and Malta (94). Some 51% are from Syria, 15% from Afghanistan and 8% Eritrea.
